Brian's Story...

My name is Brian Hughes, I am 62 years of age and reside in the Lake Macquarie area. I served with 32 small ships squadron during the Vietnam War, for a short time during the early 1970‘s. I later served 16 years with the New South Wales Police Force. I had my first Basal Cell Carcinoma (mole) removed from my belly a long time ago. I now have five further scars on my belly/stomach area. A 4” scar on my left shoulder blade. A scar on my left temple two attempts initially to remove all signs of the BCC, Melanoma. Another scar next to it as a recent inclusion. I also now have two craters on my scalp (head) one front left, the other at the back of my head. Both fit a 50 cent coin in them. The skin grafts were taken from my thighs. Luckily I am not a model. Yes! I do get depressed, yes I might be starred at when out. But as one of my nieces said “Hey B, you can go anywhere dressed as an astronaut, you have the moon on your head.” I recently lost my younger brother to Cancer. I am alive thanks to early detection and treatment. I now have a tattoo on my chest “Faith & Family” Without both life can be difficult.
